texas readers club

in 2nd grade there is a program you join called the "texas readers club" & everyone will be awarded a reading certificate and be invited to a special program by meeting all the requirements at the end of the year. we have all school year to read 15 books & write book reports on them, but you have to read 1 award winner, 7 fiction, 7 non-fiction, 1 history, 1 travel, 1 biography & 2 science. we also can't read more than 2 books by the same author, the books have to be at least 100 pages & the books can't be the same type like horses or mysteries. at the end of the year we have to do a creative presentation to our whole class on one part of our very favorite book we read. for my creative project i choose do make a poster on the coral reef which i read about in the book "oceans" by darlene r. stille. for my presentation i'm going to let my class know that oceans are not just salt water, but that it is home to many animals & living things. that the ocean is thousands of feet deep & that every parts of the oceans are connected but it is split into 7 big parts. the coral reef is my favorite because of all the different types of coral that makes it up. there is hard coral, soft coral, it comes in all different shapes, sizes & colors... it's amazingly beautiful. tropical fish, sea horses, sea sponges & many other really cool creatures live in all the corals. also did you know that coral reefs can only live in water that is warm all year round. one day i would really really like to visit & swim in the coral reef!


i think out of all the projects i've made for school, this one has been my favorite! i had so much fun trying to come with ideas on how to show all the different kids of coral you'd find in the coral reef. mommy even found me a sea sponge that i dipped in paint & then sea sponged my poster with it so it looked just like the ocean. when i was done painting with it i cut some of it up & glued it on the poster as well. i really loved the soft daisy cup polyps that i saw in the book so i tried to create my own with some felt flowers. my favorite part of my poster is all my sea star families i made, i even overlapped them like they really do. i'm really proud of how creative i got with my creative presentation & hope i get an A+!!!

    I think you will get an A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++!! That is one BEAUTIFUL project and the fact it is connected to the Texas Readers Club is even more special. It looks like they knew what they were doing when they picked the type of books, what a great mix. I am as proud of you for doing the reading and reporting as I am of this project. When I first saw the poster it really looked real. I had to look again to see it was a Ella creation. I love everything about it and you did get the star fish right on the money. We have lots of star fish up here, when I go crabbing we almost always have star fish in our crab cages and lust let them loose. Some of them get really big! In Oregon at Canon beach at low tide you can see thousands of star fish and sea urchins. In Hawaii you can swim around some of the coral and observe and hand feed fish swimming around you.
