yesterday at livi's school (shady oak) they took a walking field trip to the fort bend postal station in downtown richmond. at school they have been working on valentines to mail to all of the mommies & daddies, they finally finished them & got to go to a real old fashioned post office to mail them out. the walk was about a mile away & it was all through downtown historic richmond, the kids got to the the courthouse, the richmond museum, city hall, the richmond water tower & all the lil shops along the way. i have to say livi's teachers are very very very brave because they had 41 students (all 4 & 5 yr olds) to keep track of in all that walking... holy cow!!!
when they finally got to the post office they got to see all different sorts of stamps, ways to mail packages, old fashioned mail boxes & how mail was put into them, all sorts of really cool things about mail that i had no idea about. mr. mata (the owner & postman) was so sweet & nice, he had a great time with all the kids. all the students got to take turns putting their special valentine in the mailbox, i can't wait to see what she made! i hope livi will take me to meet him someday so he can teach me some really neat things too.
Ella, I hope you do get Livi to take you to this Post Office as it is a dying breed and you should experience it while it is available. Livi, I bet you really enjoyed that day. What a lovely walk in a beautiful little Texas town right back into a time when things were all done by hand and it worked very well. Now that is what I call an educational field trip and Mr. Mata looks like he was the perfect “teacher” for that day. Ella looks so big mailing her valentine letter. When I was her age my idea of a field trip was walking to the creek that ran next to the house and looking for tadpole eggs.
